The Lacuna Method is a new and innovative treatment to treat the fungal toe nail. We now know that the infection source is the skin underneath the nail, not the nail plate itself but it causes damage to the nail causing the thickened and discoloured appearance. The method involves drilling micro holes into the nail plate which allows the anti fungal preparation provided to pool under the nail & so treating the infection at its source. We would recommend testing the nail first (although this is not compulsory, it is best practice) to confirm the presence of fungal elements.
This treatment is not a quick fix and treatment length does vary depending on the severity. It may not suitable for all fungal nail infections, again, due to severity but this will be discussed with you at your initial appointment and alternatives suggested should the Podiatrist feel that this treatment is not for you.
